SUMMARY:ORTOVOX Safety Session: SAM3D Avalanche Terrain & Tour Planning – Golden\, CO
DESCRIPTION:Colorado Adventure Guides and ORTOVOX are bringing the ORTOVOX Safety Session on Avalanche Terrain and Tour Planning to Bentgate Mountaineering in Golden\, CO. \nThis interactive clinic gives participants the opportunity to work through avalanche-terrain and tour-planning scenarios using the ORTOVOX Safety Academy Mountain 3D model. Working in small groups\, participants identify terrain features\, interpret avalanche forecast information and use that information to make route-planning decisions. \nWhat We’ll Work On\nDuring the session\, participants will explore: \n\nSlope angle and why slopes over 30° matter in avalanche terrain\nSlope aspect and elevation\nTerrain traps and other terrain hazards\nHow to read avalanche danger ratings\nHow to interpret an avalanche forecast by aspect\, elevation and avalanche problem\nHow to apply forecast information to terrain\nHow to identify safer and higher-risk route options\nHow group goals\, experience and risk tolerance influence tour planning\n\nThe seminar specifically works through slope steepness\, aspect\, elevation\, weather\, terrain traps and avalanche-forecast interpretation before moving into route planning. \nHow the Clinic Works\nParticipants begin by identifying avalanche terrain on a topographic map\, including slopes steeper than 30°\, relevant aspects and terrain traps. They then transfer that information to the SAM 3D mountain and use avalanche forecast information to identify terrain of concern. \nFrom there\, each group plans and evaluates ascent and descent routes. The exercises ask participants to consider whether a route avoids avalanche terrain and terrain traps\, whether it exposes the group to remotely triggered avalanches\, and whether the route fits the group’s agreed-upon level of acceptable risk. \nGroup Decision-Making\nA central part of the session is understanding how group dynamics affect backcountry decisions. Participants consider compatibility of goals\, skills and equipment\, experience\, familiarity with terrain and risk tolerance before making route choices together. \nAbout the ORTOVOX Safety Academy Mountain 3D Model\nThe SAM model is designed to make avalanche risk management and tour planning more visual and interactive. Participants use the model to examine terrain factors such as slope steepness\, aspect and danger areas and then combine those observations with avalanche forecast information to select routes appropriate to the group’s risk tolerance. \nReserve Your Free Spot\nSpace is limited. Advance RSVP required. \nEvent Team: \n\nOrganizer: Colorado Adventure Guides\nPresented in partnership with: ORTOVOX\nHosted at: Bentgate Mountaineering\n\nExplore all free Avy Savvy Winter Clinics → \nReady for formal avalanche training? SUMMARY:AIARE 1 Avalanche Safety
DESCRIPTION:These courses will take place along the continental divide with a classroom in Dumont and field days near Loveland and/or Berthoud Passes. \nLearn. Practice. Stay Alive.\nTraveling in the backcountry requires a solid understanding of avalanche risk and the knowledge to mitigate these risks through appropriate terrain assessment and decision making. Colorado is home to one of the most complex snowpacks in the entire world\, and people come from all across the globe to study the snowpack here. Our local team of AIARE-certified leaders and instructors have an intimate relationship with the local terrain and snowpack conditions where we operate & will teach you how to recognize\, manage\, and minimize these hazards\, and to reduce risks. Avalanche Safety education is the core of our winter operations and we are pleased to offer education in six Colorado Counties\, including ski resort-based and hut-based courses. \nOur 3-Day AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Courses in the Front Range zone combines pre-course e-learning\, classroom\, and field instruction to introduce participants to the hazards of traveling in avalanche terrain. SUMMARY:Avalanche Safety + State of the Snowpack – Golden\, CO
DESCRIPTION:Refresh the Fundamentals. Understand This Season.\nThis clinic is designed for backcountry travelers who already have some experience and want a practical refresher on the avalanche-safety fundamentals that matter most before and during a tour. \nWe’ll review forecast interpretation\, rescue gear\, weather and snowpack observations\, terrain selection\, and group communication — then connect those skills to the actual evolution of this season’s Colorado snowpack. \nWhat We’ll Review\n\nAvalanche rescue gear and training progression\nReading the avalanche forecast beyond the headline danger rating\nWeather\, wind\, snowfall\, and field observations\nSnowpack layering and common avalanche problems\nSlope angle\, aspect\, elevation\, terrain traps\, and trigger points\nGroup communication and exposure management\nHow the season’s weather has shaped the snowpack we are traveling on now\n\nThese themes come directly from the clinic presentation\, which moves through gear\, training\, forecast use\, field observation\, snowpack structure\, terrain\, and group management. \nReading the Mountain\nA forecast is only part of the picture. Participants will review what to look for in the field\, including wind direction and drifting snow\, recent snowfall\, temperature changes\, snowpack structure\, terrain characteristics\, and signs of instability. The presentation’s observation framework centers on weather\, snowpack\, terrain\, and team. \nState of the Snowpack\nThe key differentiator in this clinic is tracking the story of the season. \nAvalanche conditions develop over time. Early-season snow\, dry periods\, faceting\, wind loading\, buried weak layers\, warming events\, and later storms all influence the structure we are traveling on today. \nWe’ll look at how the season has progressed and connect that history to the current avalanche forecast and terrain choices. The presentation’s State of the Snowpack section specifically follows the season month by month\, showing how persistent weak layers\, wind loading\, storm cycles\, and new loading can build on one another. \nWho Should Attend?\nBest for backcountry skiers\, splitboarders\, snowmobilers\, and other winter recreationists who have some previous experience or avalanche education and want a seasonal refresher. \nExperience Level: Beginner–Intermediate / Refresher \nReserve Your Free Spot\nSpace is limited. Advance RSVP required. \nEvent Team:\n\nOrganizer: Colorado Adventure Guides\nHosted in partnership with: Bentgate Mountaineering\n\nExplore all free Avy Savvy Winter Clinics → \nReady for formal avalanche training?
