SUMMARY:AIARE Avalanche Aware – Golden\, CO
DESCRIPTION:Build a Better Understanding of Avalanche Risk\nJoin Colorado Adventure Guides at Bentgate Mountaineering in Golden for AIARE Avalanche Aware\, an introductory avalanche awareness clinic designed to help winter recreationists better understand avalanche hazards\, recognize avalanche terrain\, use the avalanche forecast\, identify obvious warning signs\, and determine appropriate next steps in avalanche education. \nNo previous avalanche education is required. \nWhat You’ll Learn\n\nHow avalanches form and where they can occur\nHow to recognize avalanche terrain and terrain traps\nHow to read an avalanche forecast\nHow danger ratings\, weather\, and recent observations inform travel decisions\nFive common warning signs of avalanche instability\nBasic strategies for avoiding avalanche terrain\nWhat education and skills to pursue next\n\nReading the Forecast & Recognizing Red Flags\nParticipants will learn where to find the most important information in an avalanche forecast\, including danger ratings\, travel advice\, elevation\, weather\, observations\, and recent avalanche activity. \nWe’ll also discuss five obvious signs of increasing avalanche danger: wind-drifted snow\, rapid warming\, heavy snowfall or rain\, cracking or collapsing snow\, and recent avalanches. \nAvalanche Terrain & Safer Choices\nAvalanches occur on and below steep\, snow-covered slopes. The clinic introduces participants to start zones\, avalanche tracks\, runouts\, terrain traps\, and basic tools for recognizing terrain where avalanche exposure may exist. \nThe goal isn’t to turn one evening into a full avalanche course — it’s to help you recognize when avalanche terrain may be present and understand when additional training is needed. \nWhat Comes Next?\nYour next step depends on how you plan to recreate. \nIf your goal is to avoid avalanche terrain\, useful skills include terrain identification\, map reading\, winter travel skills\, and first aid. \nIf you plan to travel in or around avalanche terrain\, you’ll need additional training in avalanche rescue\, risk management\, forecast interpretation\, terrain selection\, and group communication. \nTravelers entering avalanche terrain should also carry and know how to use a transceiver\, probe\, and shovel. \nWho Should Attend?\nIdeal for backcountry skiers and splitboarders\, snowshoers\, snowmobilers\, winter hikers\, mountaineers\, and anyone who recreates around steep\, snow-covered terrain. \nNo previous avalanche education required. \nReserve Your Free Spot\nSpace is limited. Advance RSVP required. \nEvent Team:\n\nOrganizer: Colorado Adventure Guides\nPresented in partnership with: AIARE (American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education)\nHosted at: Bentgate Mountaineering\n\nExplore all free Avy Savvy Winter Clinics → \nReady for formal avalanche training? SUMMARY:Avalanche Safety + State of the Snowpack – Golden\, CO
DESCRIPTION:Refresh the Fundamentals. Understand This Season.\nThis clinic is designed for backcountry travelers who already have some experience and want a practical refresher on the avalanche-safety fundamentals that matter most before and during a tour. \nWe’ll review forecast interpretation\, rescue gear\, weather and snowpack observations\, terrain selection\, and group communication — then connect those skills to the actual evolution of this season’s Colorado snowpack. \nWhat We’ll Review\n\nAvalanche rescue gear and training progression\nReading the avalanche forecast beyond the headline danger rating\nWeather\, wind\, snowfall\, and field observations\nSnowpack layering and common avalanche problems\nSlope angle\, aspect\, elevation\, terrain traps\, and trigger points\nGroup communication and exposure management\nHow the season’s weather has shaped the snowpack we are traveling on now\n\nThese themes come directly from the clinic presentation\, which moves through gear\, training\, forecast use\, field observation\, snowpack structure\, terrain\, and group management. \nReading the Mountain\nA forecast is only part of the picture. Participants will review what to look for in the field\, including wind direction and drifting snow\, recent snowfall\, temperature changes\, snowpack structure\, terrain characteristics\, and signs of instability. The presentation’s observation framework centers on weather\, snowpack\, terrain\, and team. \nState of the Snowpack\nThe key differentiator in this clinic is tracking the story of the season. \nAvalanche conditions develop over time. Early-season snow\, dry periods\, faceting\, wind loading\, buried weak layers\, warming events\, and later storms all influence the structure we are traveling on today. \nWe’ll look at how the season has progressed and connect that history to the current avalanche forecast and terrain choices. The presentation’s State of the Snowpack section specifically follows the season month by month\, showing how persistent weak layers\, wind loading\, storm cycles\, and new loading can build on one another. \nWho Should Attend?\nBest for backcountry skiers\, splitboarders\, snowmobilers\, and other winter recreationists who have some previous experience or avalanche education and want a seasonal refresher. \nExperience Level: Beginner–Intermediate / Refresher \nReserve Your Free Spot\nSpace is limited. Advance RSVP required. \nEvent Team:\n\nOrganizer: Colorado Adventure Guides\nHosted in partnership with: Bentgate Mountaineering\n\nExplore all free Avy Savvy Winter Clinics → \nReady for formal avalanche training? SUMMARY:AIARE 2 Hut Based
DESCRIPTION:Analyzing Snow Stability and Avalanche Hazard\nThis 3-day course provides backcountry leaders the opportunity to advance their avalanche knowledge and decision-making skills. The AIARE 2 course builds on the introductory avalanche hazard management model introduced in AIARE 1 and adds to it the evaluation of critical hazard assessment factors. All students must have taken AIARE 1\, Avalanche Rescue\, and have one season of practical experience after taking the AIARE 1 course. \nOur AIARE 2 courses are unique because we run them only in hut-based or a snow camping-based (tent\, snow shelter) format. This is an amazing way to immerse yourself in the environment while also learning how to execute an overnight in the winter backcountry. Students will describe and discuss weather\, snowpack\, and avalanche processes\, and identify how these processes relate to observations and travel within avalanche terrain. \nWhat You’ll Learn\n\nOBSERVATIONS \n\nIdentifying avalanche terrain where consequences may be more severe\nDifferentiating where specific avalanche hazards exist within the landscape\nLearning how to close gaps of uncertainty through identifying key observations within your group\, the terrain\, or the snowpack\n\nWEATHER/SNOWPACK \n\nInterpreting weather\, snow\, and avalanche observations to make terrain decisions\nMore advanced snow science and analysis\n\nLEADERSHIP \n\nLeadership skills to use in a small team\, including facilitating small group discussions\, promoting appropriate terrain selection\, and utilizing simple risk management strategies\nImplement a basic forecasting framework that can be used in conjunction with and in the absence of local supporting avalanche information
