Beginning on an 1880’s wagon road, this hike climbs abruptly to treeline through a spruce forest, passing by Francie’s cabin (Summit Huts), and into a vast alpine meadow. The Lower Crystal lake is situated at the head of the valley, surrounded by towering, craggy peaks. Reaching the upper lake adds a higher level of difficulty as the narrow trail cuts into the south slope of Peak 10, traversing to reach an upper basin at 12,900 feet, where the upper lake is situated. Lower Lake – 4 mile r/t 1,000 feet. Upper Lake – 8 mile r/t 2,500 feet.
