The KBYG program was created for middle and high school students and can be presented in a 50 minute school assembly or class period. The high energy video and slide show, along with the Q&A chat with a local avalanche professional will keep students engaged and entertained.
Students will see the destructive power of avalanches, how people get in trouble, and the basics of how to avoid them, all through the eyes of avalanche professionals, pro athletes, accident victims and rescuers, and their peers. We don’t preach and we don’t tell skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers to stay home – we encourage them to get some education to get out and have fun safely.
The Know Before You Go program takes 40-80 minutes to present, will fit within a school class or assembly period, and consists of:
- An engaging video showing the destructive power of avalanches and what you need to know to stay safe in avalanche terrain
- A local avalanche professional telling their avalanche stories
- A slide presentation with more details about how to spot avalanche danger, how to navigate in avalanche terrain, what gear to carry and how to use it, how to find a report of current avalanche conditions in your area, and how to learn more about avalanches
- Discussion with question and answers
