CAG’s Professional Mentorship Program (PMP)
Aspire to Diversity

Here at Colorado Adventure Guides we know some people face hurdles when trying to break into the world of backcountry ski/splitboard guiding and avalanche education instructing.

PMP fosters the professional and personal growth of all individuals; however our program’s focus is to connect mentors with mentees from historically marginalized communities to help them achieve their highest professional aspirations. We believe mutual understanding is crucial to fostering the development of a diverse group of outdoor leaders.

This will ultimately enlarge, but also diversify, the fields. Accordingly, in the 2024/2025 season, we will give particular attention to supporting two cohorts through our program – a BIPOC group and a women’s group.

This program is geared towards individuals who aspire to a position or career in avalanche education or backcountry ski/splitboard guiding. It is open to all seeking mentorship, so apply! Applications will be accepted before October 31st of each season. The program will run from Dec-March and will include two-hour virtual sessions and one-day field sessions each month throughout the season as well as open communication with your mentor and fellow mentees.

Women and BIPOC Focus
Get out with like-minded individuals

We were one of the first outfitters to offer women’s-specific avalanche education courses, and are the biggest provider of AIARE avalanche education in Colorado. We’ve found that many women find it difficult to grow and sustain their careers in this field. AIARE says that despite making up over 30% of AIARE recreational students, women, non-binary, and genderqueer folks represent only about 15% of AIARE’s pool of instructors. Women also comprise a smaller number of ski guides and instructors than men. Barriers are further amplified for women who are racialized, disabled, trans, mothers, poor/working class, or who hold other historically marginalized identities. Not sure where to start? Join one of our women’s specific courses this winter.

We have also partnered again this season with the amazing group of Backcountry Together! Backcountry Together is a community and organization that aims to lower the barrier to entry into backcountry splitboarding and skiing for BIPOC individuals.

If you aspire to professional growth in this field, please apply to our mentorship program’s BIPOC or Women’s cohorts.
