Step beyond the trailhead with confidence! This two-module backcountry navigation course is designed to give you the skills to move through Colorado’s mountains with clarity and control, whether you’re relying on a map and compass, digital tools, or both.
Choose a single module or complete the full progression at a discounted rate as you build from foundational analog techniques to modern GPS-based navigation with CalTopo. Through a mix of focused instruction and hands-on field scenarios, you’ll learn how to read terrain, plan efficient routes, stay oriented, and adapt in real time- developing the judgment and decision-making skills that define safe travel in the backcountry.
This course is built to meet you where you are and level up your navigation skills in a practical way. You can take either module on its own or combine both for a complete backcountry navigation class at a discounted rate.
Focuses on analog navigation- breaking down topographic maps, terrain interpretation, and compass use so you can confidently move through terrain without relying on technology.
Shifts to digital tools, where you’ll learn how to plan, track, and share routes using CalTopo, along with strategies for managing offline maps and conserving battery life in the field.
Each module blends classroom-style learning with real-world application, so you’re not just learning concepts-you’re actively using them out in the field.
By the end of this course, you’ll have a clear system for planning and executing backcountry travel with confidence. You’ll know how to build efficient routes, stay found in complex terrain, and make informed decisions when conditions change. More importantly, you’ll understand how to integrate analog and digital navigation tools so you’re never dependent on a single system.
Your course includes a professional instructor, a printed topographic map, and a certificate of completion. Come prepared with your own baseplate compass and the essentials for a full day outside-this is hands-on, immersive learning designed to stick long after the course ends.
Both modules $310, single module $200. Prices are all in- no hidden fees.
