Immerse yourself into the backcountry on your avalanche education course. Imagine spending the weekend with avalanche professionals in the backcountry, learning about snow safety while sipping tea in front of a crackling wood stove. Backcountry skiing or snowboarding right to the hut to enjoy a cold beer while debriefing the day. For the winter season we will be offering both the 3-day AIARE 1 course as well as the 3-day AIARE 2 and 1-day AIARE Rescue courses. Intro to Backcountry/Hut Trip Courses

3-Day Intro to Backcountry and Hut Tripping

Join us on this 3 day course to learn the ins and outs of backcountry travel in the winter and how to properly execute a winter hut trip. Topics to be covered in the course include gear overviews, basic skinning technique, intro to terrain management, avalanche awareness, and we will also spend time learning the proper etiquette to using a backcountry hut. Students and instructors will work together to prep and cook meals, gather water, keep the fire going, ect.

An often over-looked skillset in the backcountry is medical training. Join us to get the training you need to be best prepared while you and your crew are in the backcountry. The WFA course is a 2-day course covering all the topics you need to know how to be medically prepared while you are away from definitive care. Couple the WFA with an AIARE Rescue course for an immersive 3-day course.

For 3 days your primary focus will be to relax at the hut and ski your face off! Ski/Splitboard Mountaineering Course

Level up

Time to level up in one of our ski/splitboard mountaineering courses! What better way than to take this course via a backcountry hut! Spend 3 days learning how to travel through intermediate to advanced terrain on your skis or splitboard. Learn topics such as ice axe and crampon usage, steep skinning and bootpacking techniques, advanced terrain management, rope-works skills, and more! These courses can be run out of Ravens Nest Hut, Duck Lake Cabins, and Francie’s Cabin.

Backcountry gear can be rented directly from Colorado Adventure Guides at our Silvethorne, CO Basecamp.

Reschedule/Cancellation Policy

Refunds will be honored for cancellations more than 14 DAYS PRIOR to a course or a camp start time. An administrative fee of 10% will be assessed for all cancellations.

All activities are Rain or Shine. In case of operator cancellation due to adverse or unsafe conditions prior to start time, first the operator will attempt to reschedule. If rescheduling is not possible, the client will receive a full refund. Operator, including guides in the field, reserve the right to shorten or reroute activity in the case of unmanageable hazards or inability of guest to complete the objective. Completion of objective-based routes is not guaranteed.

Rescheduling will be honored 14 days prior to course start date. An administrative fee of 10% will be assessed for all rescheduling. This allows us the time to contact those who have been put on the wait-list.

Prerequisites

Our hut trips can be taken on alpine touring skis, tele or splitboard. Alpine touring skis and splitboards are available for rent from our Silverthorne, CO basecamp. Students on skis or boards must be comfortable in steep blue to black terrain at the ski resort.

Frequently Asked Questions

How physically fit do I need to be for this course?

Colorado Adventure Guides is priority is keeping our patrons and students safe. Our instructors are trained to recognize potentially hazardous situations in the backcountry; they plan and operate accordingly. Prior to the start of any course or backcountry trip you will be asked to complete a brief health history. The failure to disclose pertinent information on the health history form could result in serious harm, even death, to the signing participant, other guests and/or the guide. All information submitted is completely confidential; it is for the guide’s use and would only be shared in the event of an emergency with medical and/or rescue personnel directly caring for the guest. This can be a physically demanding course, and your ability to enjoy the adventure depends on your health and fitness, thus it’s recommended that you are in good physical condition.

What if I would like to book a private group course?

For those who would like to select all the members of their party, you may book a private group course. If you are interested, please let us know!

When and how do I meet up with the group?

For courses your instructor will contact you at least 2 weeks prior to course start to discuss details.

Should I tip my instructor/guide?

Your instructors work hard before, during, and after your course to provide you with a great experience and while not expected, gratuities are always highly appreciated and if you had a safe, educational, and fun experience. Gratuities typically range from 15-20%.
