Backcountry Navigation Course

Build confidence navigating Colorado’s backcountry with this immersive two-day course that blends foundational skills with modern tools. You can choose to take 1 of the 2 modules, or complete the course by taking both at a discounted rate.

Module one focuses on map and compass navigation—reading topographic maps, understanding terrain, and making sound route-finding decisions in the field.

Module two introduces digital navigation using platforms like CalTopo, including trip planning, GPS tracking, and managing offline maps.

Each module is delivers a balanced mix of classroom instruction and hands-on field application.

You’ll learn to plan efficient routes, stay oriented, and adapt to changing conditions. This course emphasizes real-world decision-making, risk management, and integrating analog and digital systems for confident, safe backcountry travel in Colorado and beyond.

Module 1: Map and Compass – Analog Navigation

• Introduction to navigation and route finding
• Topographic maps deep dive

• Taking and following bearings
• In-field practical navigation exercises and scenarios
• Essential skill not dependent on your cell phone’s GPS or battery life.

Module 2: Digital Navigation and Integration

• Digital navigation overview
• Intro to digital mapping tools
• Complete route planning session on CalTopo
• Trip planning exercises
• Sharing CalTopo maps and route plan with others
• In-field digital navigation practice, analog + digital integration, scenario based navigation
• Tips on extending battery life in the field
