Also known as “Flower Valley”, this hike begins at 12,400 feet and climbs about 1,200 feet to the Continental Divide.  The lush valley provides relatively easy access to the alpine tundra which is overflowing with wildflowers during the main summer months.  While the full hike to the Divide is 4 miles roundtrip, the hike can be modified to suit all types of hikers and wildflower enthusiasts.

Distance: 6.5 mile round trip

Chihuahua Lake is one of the best day hike options for those visiting the Dillon, Keystone area. This moderate alpine lake hike climbs rapidly out of the Peru Creek valley, and quickly gains a high basin covered in beaver ponds. Chihuahua Lake is situated at 12,200 feet at the base of Grizzly Peak and in the shadow of Grays and Torreys Peaks. The 6.5 mile round trip, 1,740 foot hike is great for those have already visited the more popular alpine lakes, or who desire an experience away from the summer crowds.

Alpine Lake Hikes – Crystal Lake

Distance: Lower Lake – 4 mile r/t | Upper Lake – 8 mile r/t

Rating: Easy

Beginning on an 1880’s wagon road, this hike climbs abruptly to treeline through a spruce forest, passing by Francie’s cabin (Summit Huts), and into a vast alpine meadow.  The Lower Crystal lake is situated at the head of the valley, surrounded by towering, craggy peaks.  Reaching the upper lake adds a higher level of difficulty as the narrow trail cuts into the south slope of Peak 10, traversing to reach an upper basin at 12,900 feet, where the upper lake is situated.  Lower Lake – 4 mile r/t  1,000 feet.   Upper Lake – 8 mile r/t  2,500 feet.

Each year, only about 150 people complete the nearly 500 mile trek between Durango and Denver on the Colorado Trail.  The CT provides a moderate challenge with spectacular views.  You can experience a portion of this iconic hike from your base camp in Summit County and encounter “through-hikers” in their natural environment.   Half and Full Day options available for all abilities.

Iconic Hikes – Wheeler Trail

Difficulty: More Difficult – Level 4

Duration: Full day – 6-7 hours

The Wheeler Trail begins in the Town of Blue River to the south of Breckenridge and traverses the Ten Mile Range at Wheeler Pass (12,408ft) between Peak 8 and 9 and descending to Copper Junction.  This 9 mile trail can be done as an out-and-back, a shuttled point-to-point, or a multi-trail link-up.  The trail passes through spruce forests and climbs into the alpine tundra for wildflower viewing and amazing views of Breckenridge, the Gore Range, the Front Range, Copper Mountain, and beyond.  It can also be linked with other area trails to connect mountain lakes with mountain passes depending on your fitness level and desires.  Choose your own adventure!

Peaks Trail

Guided Hiking Tours

Difficulty:  All abilities – Level 1-3

Duration: Half Day (4-5 hours) / Full Day (6-8 hours)

The Peaks Trail connects Breckenridge and Frisco over about 8 miles of meandering singletrack.  The Peaks Trail tracks north-south climbing from Frisco to Breckenridge at the foot of the Ten Mile Range beneath the towering crags of Peaks 1 through 4 and the more gentle summits of Peaks 5 through 7.  The hike provides stunning views to the east, passes trickling mountain streams, and a peaceful mountain lake. It can be done as a 15.5 mile out-and-back, shuttled point-to-point, or as part of a multi-trail link-up, depending on your desires and fitness level.  Options available for all abilities and can be modified for a family outing with children (call for information).

Reschedule/Cancellation Policy

Refunds will be honored for cancellations with more than 48 Hours prior notice to a trip start time. An administrative fee of 10% will be assessed for all cancellations.

All activities are Rain or Shine. In case of operator cancellation due to adverse or unsafe conditions prior to start time, first the operator will attempt to reschedule. If rescheduling is not possible, the client will receive a full refund. Operator, including guides in the field, reserve the right to shorten or reroute activity in the case of unmanageable hazards or inability of guest to complete the objective. Completion of objective-based routes is not guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How physically fit do I need to be for this activity?

Colorado Adventure Guides is priority is keeping our patrons and students safe. Our instructors are trained to recognize potentially hazardous situations in the backcountry; they plan and operate accordingly. Prior to the start of any course or backcountry trip you will be asked to complete a brief health history. The failure to disclose pertinent information on the health history form could result in serious harm, even death, to the signing participant, other guests and/or the guide. All information submitted is completely confidential; it is for the guide’s use and would only be shared in the event of an emergency with medical and/or rescue personnel directly caring for the guest. Your ability to enjoy the adventure depends on your health and fitness, thus it’s recommended that you are in good physical condition.

What if I would like to join a group outing?

All of our guided hiking trips are booked private and custom and priced accordingly. If you are looking for a group trip option please contact us to see if we have any group trips available on the schedule.

When and how do I meet up with the guide?

Your instructor/guide will contact you with more details at least 48 hours prior to the date of your trip that will include meeting time and location.

Should I tip my guide?

Your guides work hard before, during, and after your trip to provide you with a great experience and while not expected, gratuities are always highly appreciated and if you had a safe, educational, and fun experience. Gratuities typically range from 15-20%.
